Mr Rowan Schouten is an Otago University medical graduate who completed New Zealand Orthopaedic training in 2009.  He then completed fellowships in spinal surgery at Royal Perth Hospital (2010) and Vancouver General Hospital, Canada (2010/2011). In 2011 he was awarded the AOSpine North American (AOSNA) Fellows research award at the 9th Annual Fellows Forum. 

In 2011 he was appointed a consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Christchurch and Burwood Hospitals where his practice includes the treatment of all spinal pathology including degenerative conditions, spinal cord injuries, fractures and tumours. He also perform primary total hip replacement surgery and participates in the general Orthopaedic trauma roster.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) and a full member of New Zealand Orthopaedic Association (NZOA), New Zealand Orthopaedic Spine Society (NZOSS), and North American Spine Society (NASS).
